Your time and comments are appreciated. I'm finding the same issue with disk performace on a production server. All the other production servers I have setup or converted are 64bit ESXi 4.1 boxes and this 3.5 box that doesn't have virtualization hardware is the first box I have encounter with such severly bad disk I/O performance. In my case I have a HP Proliant DL380 with 3 x SCSI U320 HDD's and see approx from 8 - 14MB's+ max when copying VM's from one box to another, I was shocked.

Hi Jason - Sorry for the delay in having your comment posted, I just had a chance to catch up on some items and saw it.

I completely understand where you're coming from with this, the months prior to the take over the tech support was pretty helpful, though the billing issues were still there. Four hours just to get to the facility to even see it is completely terrible! We thankfully didn't have the much invested into the company and was able to relocate the data fairly quickly.

As a suggestion to perhaps help your plight with Internap, can you have a DRAC card installed to your servers so you can take care of some basic things instead of them? Though if they need to install them that's another consideration :)

I too am a former Vitalstream customer who went through the Internap merger. I own a small web hosting business and have a half-rack colocation with VS/Internap. My network consists of about 6 Dell servers and I dread having to deal with their customer/tech support in any way.

Before the Internap take over there were 24/7 on-site techs that could help out with any issues that would arise with any of my servers. They were very knowledgable, helpful and very nice. Once Internap took over they removed the techs and replaced them with an inempt security attendant who has zero tech knowledge and even has trouble pushing buttons to restart servers. They now contract out any technical support needs to a local company in the area. That change resulted in long wait times to get anything done. It once took 4 hours for them to just arrive at the facility to look-in to a problem I was having. All the while, every single website/service that I host was down and I was just getting pounded with phone calls from my customers.

I hate Internap with a passion and want to leave desperatly, but as anybody with a hosting company knows, it is difficult to just pick up and move without significant downtime for all their customers.

Don't even get me started on billing issues.....

I installed an ESX Server on 3.5 on an IDE Drive, I can't see the data store, when I am trying to add the storage for Virtual machine. I just want to know, it doesn't support IDE at all, I also have 2 x SATA drives, how would I get them working.

I specialise in windows, so will appeciate a detail help.

Thanks,

Well, you know I'm in Retail... but it's not that cracked up as it's claimed to be. Sure there may be "one time deals" that are only offered at X time at G place, or G place for "one day only" that in reality, is just some ploy to get customers to spend that dollar on that specific day so whatever... there's always going to be more of that Z product if someone wants it, unless there's a limited supply.

I think Black Friday is kind of like Halloween. Very anti climatic.

I'm certainly guilty for picking up candy canes, they are good. In a way I hope if people can ignore it so retails become aware and hold off from setting them up far in advance. I also don't think that it helps increase shopping (this is offhand and don't have numbers to back this up) except for maybe the Christmas and holiday decorations that are setup. I would be curious how many sales are made on those items too as the season progresses.

It's all run by the commercial industry. The Christmas season is the time to shop, so they'll do everything they can to extend that season. And why shouldn't they? It works.

We all make the same off-hand comments when they bring out the Christmas stuff in October and we all try to ignore it it for just a few more weeks. Then again, some of us give in to The Man and buy his candy canes, further perpetuating the cycle.

Yeah, I'm looking at you Chris.

Been meaning to respond to this one for a while...

It's been my observation that most people will agree with you; they'll say they don't care one way or the other about the lives of celebrities. It's also been my observation that these same people get sucked into watching those "entertainment news" shows and reading the magazines, whether they realize it or not.

I relate this to the attitude regarding paparazzi. Everyone hates them, but most people don't realize that they are supporting the paparazzi by reading those magazines and watching those shows. Where do they think all those photos and footage comes from?

P.S. Nice blog. Keep it going.

Hi John,

I also sent you an email but thought afterwards I would post here as well.

There has been a fair amount of interest in the article and I will be writing a follow up over the next couple weeks. I'd be happy to answer questions about this and would like to get an idea if I should touch upon something in the follow up people are wondering that I didn't mention here.

I can be contacted at chris@beinguseless.com
